In 1988, Middlesbrough-born songwriter and guitarist Chris Rea took stock of a decade's work with New Light Through Old Windows, a compilation built not on original album cuts but on re-recordings drawn from earlier LPs. Recorded between Mountain Studios in Montreux and Studio Miraval in Provence, it reimagines material like 'Fool (If You Think It's Over)', 'Josephine' and 'I Can Hear Your Heartbeat' with a cleaner, fuller studio sound. It also included a brand new track, 'Working On It', Rea's only US number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. In the UK, it reached number five and remained on the Albums Chart for over a year, earning triple platinum status.
