70年代初頭のニューヨークで生まれたディープ・ファンクをTom Moultonがダンスフロア仕様へ拡張した一曲。
Dawson Smithによる「I Don’t Know If I Can Make It」は、ファンクとプロト・ディスコが交差する時代の空気を反映した楽曲。力強いリズムとソウルフルなヴォーカルが軸となり、当時のダンスフロアで機能していたグルーヴがそのまま刻まれている。
この楽曲を手がけたのが、12インチシングルのフォーマットを確立したことで知られるTom Moulton。原曲の骨格を活かしながら、パート1とパート2に分けたロングミックスで展開を拡張し、フロアで持続的に機能する構成へと仕上げている。
重心の低いファンク・グルーヴに、初期ディスコ特有の高揚感が加わったサウンド。シンプルな反復の中で徐々に変化していく流れが特徴で、現場でも扱いやすい内容となっている。
本作はリマスターが施され、当時のダンスフロアで鳴っていた質感を保ちながら再提示された仕様。ニューヨークのファンクからディスコへ移行する過程を体感できるヴァイナル。
