Parisを拠点に活動するミュージシャン／プロデューサー／DJ Leo Kalが、NUTRIA Soundsから5曲入りデビューEPを届ける。
Leo Kalの「Roots EP」は、NUTRIA Soundsが迎えた初のリリース。レーベルが掲げる、ソウルへ向かう感覚と身体を動かすリズム、その両方をきちんと意識した一枚だ。派手さよりも質感と流れを重視し、深いサウンドの中に抑制の効いた手つきが通っている。
オープナー「Ceiba」は、軽く弾むリズムで始まりながら、しっかり地に足のついたグルーヴを持つ。続く「Station Verlaine」は、滑らかな鍵盤とゆるやかに転がる土台が印象的。タイトル曲「Roots」では、温かいピアノのフレーズと土っぽいパーカッションが中心に置かれ、音の輪郭がはっきり立つ。「Round 50」は少しクラブ寄りの空気に振れ、90年代後半を思わせるスペーシーなハウス感を含み、「Second Eyes」はテンポを落として、質感の残る余韻で締める。
全体としては、有機的でソウルフル、そして引き算の効いたハウス。リズム、ハーモニー、テクスチャーのバランスが良く、フロアでも家聴きでも自然に馴染む内容になっている。

Leo Kai opens a new chapter here with a fine debut on NUTRIA Sounds that leans into deep sounds with maximum feels and knowing restraint. Opener 'Celba' sets the subtle tone with a light, buoyant rhythm that feels grounded but with a hint of mischief in its eye. 'Station Verlaine' drifts forward on smooth keys and a gently rolling foundation, then the title cut 'Roots' centres warm piano figures and earthy percussion. 'Round 50' shifts into a more club-facing mood with a hint of late 90s spacey house, and 'Second Eyes' closes at a slower pace. It's textural and jungle-esque and leaves a lingering afterglow.
