60年代から70年代にかけてシカゴの音楽シーンを牽引した伝説的なバンドリーダー、Paul Coleman。ファンク・グループのRasputin's Stashや、ソウル・ミュージックの傑作を残したCrystal Windsを率いた彼が、90年代にひっそりと制作していた異色の音源が発掘された。
この音源が生まれた背景には、驚くべきエピソードがある。当時、全米放送の気象情報番組「The Weather Channel」の幹部から、多額の報酬を条件にオリジナル曲の制作を依頼されたのだ。彼はすぐさま「スーパーマン・モード」に突入し、1日1曲という驚異的なペースで作曲とプログラミングに没頭。昼夜を問わず制作に明け暮れたが、完成直後に放送局が買収されたことで計画は頓挫。楽曲は数回放送されただけでお蔵入りとなり、報酬すら支払われないまま歴史の闇に埋もれてしまったという。
サウンドは、今や「90年代のヴェイパーウェイヴ・ジャズ」とでも呼ぶべき、ドリーミーでどこかノスタルジックな質感が特徴だ。心地よいビートと洗練されたジャズ・エッセンスが溶け合い、まるで当時のブラウン管越しに空の移ろいを眺めているような、不思議な没入感を与えてくれる。
スコットランドでプレスされたこのヴァイナルは、空をイメージした「クラウド・カラー」仕様。針を落とせば、淡い雲のような色彩の盤面が回転し、滑らかなメロディとともに部屋の空気を塗り替えていく。世界限定500枚、奇跡の復刻だ。
