Larry Levanの伝説を覆した、Tony Humphriesによるゴスペル・ディスコ大名曲！
1982年、BrooklynのFirst Baptist Church of Crown HeightsでPhyliss McKoy Joubertが率いるCelestial Choirによって録音されたゴスペル曲「Stand On The Word」。Tony HumphriesがBirdel’s Recordsでこの音源を発見し、New JerseyのZanzibarでプレイすると瞬く間にクラブの定番へ。1985年、Next PlateauからJoubert Singers名義で再録・再構築され、HumphriesとGeorge Rodriguezがミックスを担当した。ピアノを中心としたゴスペルの力強いコーラスに、追加されたシンセ、ギター、疾走感のあるリズムを加え、教会音楽とNYディスコを結びつけた歴史的作品。長年「Larry Levan Mix」として流通したヴァージョンは、2003年のブートレッグを発端とする誤ったクレジットで、実際のクラブ・ミックスはTony Humphriesによるもの。今回の復刻盤は、そのTony Humphries版を収録した重要な12インチ。

By now the byzantine myth has been fully investigated; all the turmoil surrounding the record might prove pedantic if the music itself wasn’t this flawless. And yet, credit where credit is due, despite the usual fracas behind oral history: it was Tony’s, not Larry’s, all along. Here, we’re spoiled with a smattering of such contested mixes, with the original studio’s synth and guitar layers wholly intact, along with Humphries’ exceptional club extension—it’s all essential and hype-sticker adorned. Still waiting for the article pinning James Murphy for his blatant rip of this triumphant gospel classic on that 2006 Nike commission.
