Nearly two decades after his last appearance on 20/20 Vision Recordings, Brett Johnson returns to the label with Broken Machine - a four-track vinyl transmission steeped in groove science, machine funk, and the unmistakable swing of underground US house music.

Brett’s relationship with 20/20 Vision stretches back to a pivotal era for the label and the wider international house scene with a flurry of underground hit records on Classic, most notably the Bounce EP championed by Derrick Carter. On 20/20 Brett produced the seminal Mind Games remixes for Formidable Force and the Everything’s Electric EP, a collaboration with DJ Heather with remix treatment courtesy Mike Shannon. Since then, Johnson has remained one of house music’s quietly influential figures whose fingerprints can be found all over the evolution of tweaked out freaky house music.

Representing Texas, Brett emerged from a scene where hip-hop, disco, Jackin house, psychedelic funk, and warehouse electronics collided without rules. That freedom still runs through his productions. Texas has long produced eccentric artists who operate in beyond genre convention, and Brett belongs firmly within that lineage: raw but sophisticated, playful yet deeply musical.

There’s a reason Brett Johnson records have endured across generations of DJs, as BJ speaks for the classic US house music tradition and alternative indie scene in the same breath.

And now BJ is back with the absolute barn stormin’ Broken Machine EP.

The opening track ‘Unstuck’ sets the tone with a driving disco inspired bassline, strong message and restless groove that constantly mutates beneath the surface. ‘Juiced’ leans deeper into Brett’s trademark boompty and late-night energy designed for sweatboxes. The drop is to die for, and causes devastation every time.

On the flip ‘Broken Machine’ can only be described as a psychedelic journey, a mind trip that would feel like an eternity at a forest festival. ‘iRemember’ closes the vinyl with a moment of slo-mo magic reminiscent of Derrick Carter’s Sound Control - Rising & Falling or A Love From Outer Space session.

At a time when much house music feels increasingly polished and predictable, Broken Machine is a reminder of what made the American underground so vital in the first place: risk, bounce, swing, and individuality. A trip into the mind’s eye while jackin’ your body…
