シカゴ・ハウスの真髄を継ぐアーティストたちが集結したコンピレーション『Category 1 Music Sampler – Vol.3』。Glenn Underground（=GU aka CVO）を中心に、Ron Carroll、Shawn Christopher、Terry Dexter、Aires Adoraといった実力派が揃い、ソウルフル・ハウス、ガラージ、ゴスペルが渾然一体となった充実の内容だ。
幕開けを飾るのは、Ron CarrollとGlenn Undergroundが手を組んだ“I’m Alive (Touch the Sky)”。温かみのあるキーボードとファンキーなベースが絡み合い、ヴォーカルが高揚感を生み出すシカゴ・ソウルフル・ハウスの真骨頂。往年のBasement BoysやShelter作品を思わせるスピリチュアルなグルーヴが広がる。
続く“He’s Got It”では、Shawn ChristopherがRichard EarnshawとRon Carrollを迎え、ゴスペルを軸にしたエネルギッシュなトラックを展開。シンセの煌めきとコーラスの厚みが一体となり、フロアでもリスニングでも心を揺さぶる仕上がりだ。
Terry Dexterによる“You Saved Me”は、UKのMarc Cotterellが手がけたガラージ・リミックスで蘇る。跳ねるビートと重層的なヴォーカルワークが印象的で、クラシックなUSサウンドにUKクラブの勢いを融合させた好リワーク。
最後を締めくくるのは、世界的リミキサーEric KupperによるAires Adora “Magic Carpet Ride”。Ron Carrollがプロデュースを担当し、Kupperらしい壮大な空間構築とドラマティックな展開が光る。大箱でも映えるスケール感のあるディープ・ハウス・トラックだ。
本作は、世代も国境も越えて繋がるハウス・コミュニティの結晶。シカゴの伝統を受け継ぎながら、UKのガラージやゴスペルの熱量を取り込んだ、多層的なグルーヴが息づくヴァイナルだ。
