ドイツの多国籍バンドMuito KaballaやYin Yinで活動してきたJan JanzenとNiklas Mundemannが組んだユニットが、ナポリ仕込みのファンクとヨーロピアン・ディスコを鳴らす。
Jiri JiriはJan JanzenとNiklas Mundemannによるデュオ。Janzenはナポリでピアノを学び、Muito Kaballaなどでジャズやワールドミュージックを横断する演奏を重ねてきた経歴を持つ。MundemannもYin Yinなどで活動し、サイケデリックでグルーヴィーなバンドサウンドに関わってきた人物だ。
本作『Give Me Disco - Vol 1』は、Batov Recordsが始動させた12インチ・シリーズの第一弾。Raja Zahrの定番曲名にちなんだシリーズで、セレクトはDJ Kobayashiが担当。全4曲を収録する。
内容は、陽射しを浴びたようなナポリ産ファンクと、風通しの良いヨーロピアン・ディスコが軸。ところどころにAfrosynthのきらめきが差し込まれる。
“Gino”や“Senza Benza”では、軽やかに舞うフルート、引き締まったパーカッション、粘り気のあるベースラインが絡み合い、身体を自然に揺らすグルーヴを作り出す。
ナポリでレコーディングされた本作には、街の持つ濃密さと開放感、そしてどこか退廃的な色気が滲む。過度な装飾に頼らず、生演奏の躍動とディスコの推進力で押し切る一枚。
ヨーロッパ経由の現行ファンク／ディスコを探しているなら確実にチェックすべき内容だ。

Downing landing wheels from Naples by way of Cologne, Jiri Jiri debut with Give Me Disco Vol 1, the first entry in Batov Records' new 12" series named after Raja Zahr's crate-digger staple. Selected by DJ Kobayashi, this four-tracker deals in sun-baked Neapolitan funk and breezy European disco with the occasional detour into Afrosynth shimmer. Formed by Jan Janzen and Niklas Mundemann, with roots in outfits like Muito Kaballa and Yin Yin, the duo lay down heat with 'Gino' and 'Senza Benza', full of fluttering flute, tight percussion and syrupy bassline. Recorded in Naples, where Janzen studied piano, the EP reflects the city's lush, louche and propulsive sway.
