ニュージャージー州ニューアーク発の短命ながらも伝説的なソウル・ダンス・グループ、The Nicky Newarkers。活動のピークは70年代半ば、わずかに残された証が1976年にMercuryからリリースされた7インチ・シングルだ。収められたのは“Woman”と“Leave Me Or Love Me”の2曲。キューバ系プロデューサーJesus AlvarezとJerry Rossが手掛け、タイトなリズムと伸びやかなヴォーカルが絡む“Woman”は、ノーザン・ソウル／ソウル・ダンス・シーンで熱烈な人気を誇る。
Mercuryのオリジナル盤は市場にほとんど出回らず、コレクター間では高値で取引される存在となった。EXPANSIONによる今回の復刻盤は、その幻のサウンドを再び手にできる貴重な機会。シンプルな構成の中に詰め込まれた都会的なグルーヴと情熱が、当時のクラブ・フロアを想起させる。ソウル・ファンなら一度は手にしたい一枚。

The Nicky Newarkers were a short-lived—but now
legendary—souldance group from Newark, New Jersey, most active in
the mid1970s. They’re known primarily for their hardtofind 45 rpm
single released on Mercury Records from 1976, featuring these two
songs “Woman” and “Leave Me Or Love Me” both produced by
CubanAmerican Jesus Alvarez with Jerry Ross.
The original Mercury pressings are super rare and highly coveted on
the Northern soul and souldance scene on the strength of the highly in
demand “Woman”. Copies have fetched anywhere from £400–£700+
