Polished jazz. Refined rock. Sharpened funk. It absorbs them all, unleashing a powerful groove.
Formed in 1969, Soul Media championed the fusion of jazz and rock. This direction took its next step with this 1973 recording, "In the Groove." It brings jazz's sharpness to the forefront, blends in rock to sharpen its edge, and injects funk to imbue it with power and elasticity. It created a powerful yet sophisticated, thoroughly "cool" music that cannot be fully categorized by existing genres such as jazz rock, jazz funk, and fusion.
This work is also praised as a response to The Crusaders, whom Jiro Inagaki was paying attention to at the time. The aim was spot on. With this work, Soul Media acquired a "sophisticated black feeling" and headed toward its final destination, "Funky Stuff."
