1980年代初頭のミズーリ州セントルイス。当時27歳の学生だったJames "Gem" Prewittは、自ら「Keyes Production」というレーベルを立ち上げ、作詞・作曲・製作・演奏のすべてを一人でこなす驚異的なマルチプレイヤーとして活動していた。その情熱が凝縮された2つのディスコ・ファンク・ナンバーが、名門ATHENS OF THE NORTHの手によりついに復刻を果たす。
A面に収められた1981年録音の「My Love Box」は、セントルイスのローカルシーンで成功を収めた名作。80s特有の煌びやかなシンセサイザーとタイトなドラム・マシンが織りなすファンク・グルーヴに乗せて、Gemの洗練されたヴォーカルが軽快に駆け抜ける。
一方、B面の「Juicy」（1983年）は、Gemが歌手のLoretta Mathisonとともにフィリピンやドイツを巡った2年間の海外ツアー中に構想を練り上げた一曲だ。旅先での異文化交流や刺激が楽曲に命を吹き込み、より深みを増した中毒性の高いコンポジションへと進化を遂げている。
漆黒の盤面に針が滑り込むと同時に、80年代のセントルイスにあった熱い空気感が一気に解き放たれる。デジタル特有の平坦な音ではなく、Gemが一人で楽器を操り、音を重ねていった製作プロセスの生々しいレイヤーが、スピーカーの振動を通じて立体的に浮かび上がる。 重心低く鳴り響くベースの弾力と、耳元をかすめるようなパーカッションの鋭いキレは、物理的な溝をトレースするこのメディアでしか味わえない鮮烈な没入体験をもたらすだろう。

Two early 80s slices of disco funk, from the taleted James (Gem) Prewitt, "My Love Box" was recorded recorded in St Louis, Missouri in 1981 and "Juicy" 1983. James Prewitt, a 27-year-old attending Forrest Park Community College in St Louis, took a leap and established his own label called Keyes Production. He demonstrated his remarkable talent by writing, producing, and playing on all of his releases.
Having tasted local success with 'My Love Box", James decided to collaborate with Loretta Mathison, another talented individual from St. Louis. Their partnership led them to sign a two-year singing tour that took them to the Philippines and Germany. It was during their time overseas that the creative ideas for the captivating track "Musical Love" (coming soon) and ''Juicy" were born, infusing their experiences into the music and resulting in a truly captivating composition.
