『Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite』は、1996年に発表されたMaxwellの記念すべきデビュー・アルバム。ソウル、ジャズ、ファンク、クワイエット・ストームを洗練された感覚で融合し、後のネオ・ソウル・ムーブメントを語るうえで欠かせない作品として高く評価されている。
当時まだ新人だったMaxwellは、本作で圧倒的な存在感を示し、Sadeの中心メンバーとして知られるStuart Matthewmanらと共に、従来のR&Bとは異なる有機的で豊かなサウンドを構築。生演奏を軸にした温かみのあるアレンジ、ジャズの影響を感じさせるコード進行、艶やかなストリングス、そして官能的で繊細なヴォーカルが一体となり、アルバム全体を通して流麗な世界観を描き出している。
代表曲「Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)」、「Sumthin' Sumthin'」、「Whenever Wherever Whatever」をはじめ、「...Til The Cops Come Knockin'」や「Suitelady (The Proposal Jam)」など、アルバムを構成する全11曲が高い完成度を誇る。シングル曲だけでなく、作品全体を通して聴くことで真価を発揮するコンセプト性の高さも本作の魅力だ。
