Detroit テクノの中核を成してきた KMS Records のカタログから、重要曲を集めたサンプラーEPの第2弾。R-Tyme、Chez Damier & Ron Trent、Dionne、Inner City という4組の名が並ぶ内容で、いずれもレーベルの歴史と直結する音源が選ばれている。
A面1曲目は R-Tyme「Use Me」の MK Mix。ミニマルな構造の中で、ファンク由来のグルーヴと緊張感のあるビートが淡々と積み重なり、フロアでの持続力を重視した Detroit らしい感覚が際立つ。続く A面2曲目は Chez Damier と Ron Trent による Inner City「Share My Life」のリミックス。Chez Damier と Ron Trent は、シカゴとデトロイトを結ぶディープ・ハウスの重要人物であり、ここではメロディとコードのうねりを活かしつつ、内省的で温度のある展開を作り上げている。
B面は Dionne の D’Pac Dub から始まる。ヴォーカル要素を抑え、リズムと空間処理に重きを置いたダブ的アプローチで、音の隙間が印象に残るトラックだ。ラストは Inner City の別曲を Carl Craig がリミックス。Carl Craig は Detroit を代表するプロデューサーの一人で、テクノからジャズ、実験音楽まで横断してきた人物。このリミックスでも、硬質なビートと洗練された構成力がはっきりと表れている。
本作は AIR Studios によるリマスタリングが施され、各曲の輪郭や低域のバランスが整理されている。KMS が築いてきた Detroit サウンドの幅広さを、4曲というコンパクトな構成で確認できる一枚。テクノ、ハウスの源流に触れたいリスナーにとっても、DJユースを前提とする人にとっても、意味のある内容だ。

Following on from the first KMS Sampler, PDD in conjunction with Armada Music & BEAT Music Fund return for Volume 2 in the series. Once again mining the delights in the expansive catalogue, Volume 2 showcases four more essential cuts. Up first is the classic MK Mix of R-Tyme’s – Use Me. Next up on the A side we have the legendary pairing of Chez Damier and Ron Trent with their remix of Inner City – Share My Life. On the flip, the D’Pac Dub of Dionne opens the B side and then rounding off the EP is the second Inner City track, this time remixed by another Detroit hero, Carl Craig.
Just like Volume 1, the audio has been lovingly remastered by AIR Studios and their team of celebrated engineers, fully utilising their mastering knowledge. Another brilliant volume from KMS!
