Description
A masterpiece by Thai percussionist Salin, who has supported Kokoroko and Yussef Dayes and earned a Juno Award nomination, presenting “Afro Thai Funk,” a fusion of 1970s West African Afrobeat and traditional Thai music.
Salin is a Thai-born percussionist, producer, and composer now based in Canada. Boasting a nomination for Global Music Album of the Year at Canada’s prestigious Juno Awards and having proven her formidable skills on live tours with Kokoroko and Yussef Dayes, she now releases her album “Rammana” on vinyl.
In this work, Salin explores a unique crossover sound she calls “Afro Thai Funk.” Based on the traditional drum “Rammana” and folk elements she learned firsthand while living in the community of Thailand’s indigenous Urak Lawoi people, as well as the syncopation characteristic of Thai funk, she masterfully fuses 1970s West African psychedelic Afrobeat, funk, and modern jazz. Sophisticated jazzy chord work and contemporary soulful production harmonize beautifully with complex West African-derived polyrhythms.
The album features 10 diverse tracks, including “Current,” which gained attention on Spotify jazz playlists, and “Si Chomphu,” imbued with exotic intensity. Combining nostalgic Thai tones with powerful grooves that echo the African earth, the result is an overwhelming showcase of the forefront of contemporary world jazz.
