1981年に残されたSpunkの“Tighten It Up”は、シカゴのファンク・シーンの熱気をそのまま閉じ込めた一枚。P-Funkの流れを汲む太いベースラインとエレクトリックなシンセ、タイトに刻まれるリズムが一体となり、荒々しさとダンス性を同時に押し出すサウンドが特徴。さらに、のちにハウス・ミュージックの基礎を築くFrankie Knucklesがミキシング・コンサルタントとして関わっており、当時としては先鋭的なフロア志向の仕上がりが際立つ。
派手さよりもグルーヴの持続力で引き込む構成で、ディスコとファンクの中間にあるような反復的な展開が印象的。シンプルなパターンを積み重ねながら徐々に高揚感を生む作りは、その後のシカゴ・クラブ・カルチャーへと繋がる感覚をはっきりと感じさせる。
