“The Catalyst Files”は、Rainer TrübyとMicheによって編纂された、LAのレーベルCatalyst Recordsの音源に焦点を当てた作品。ソウル、スピリチュアル・ジャズ、ジャズ・ファンクといった要素が交差するカタログから選び抜かれた楽曲群が収められている。
Catalyst Recordsは、70年代を中心に独自の存在感を放ったレーベルで、自由度の高い演奏や精神性の強い表現で知られる。その音源は長年にわたり、Gilles PetersonやPatrick ForgeといったDJたちに支持され、クラブとリスニングの両面で再評価されてきた。本作でもその魅力がしっかりと伝わる内容となっている。
収録曲は、深く沈み込むようなベースラインや、流動的なリズム、空間的な鍵盤やホーンの絡みが特徴で、スピリチュアル・ジャズ特有の浮遊感と緊張感が同時に味わえる。シンプルな構成の中に即興性とグルーヴが共存し、聴き進めるごとに表情を変えていく。
